Take advantage of the experiential-learning opportunities built into many programs.

What is CRS under BIS?

The Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) was introduced by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) to ensure the quality and safety of electronic and IT products entering the Indian market.

  • Currently, 76 product categories are covered under CRS.
  • Any manufacturer (domestic or foreign) who produces, imports, stores, or sells these products in India must obtain CRS registration.
  • Products must be tested in BIS-approved laboratories before registration.
  • Once registered, the manufacturer is authorized to use the Standard Mark (R-number) on their products.
CRS Registration — Step-by-Step Process
  1. Create a BIS portal account
    • Indian manufacturers: provide MSME or business details.
    • Foreign manufacturers: furnish a valid business licence.
    • The account will be used for applications and tracking progress.
  2. Raise a testing request
    • Log in with your credentials and create a test request.
    • Provide details such as brand, model numbers, applicable CCL, and marking plate design.
  3. Sample submission & laboratory testing
    • Submit samples to a BIS-approved laboratory.
    • Labs will test against the relevant Indian Standards.
    • Maintain records of sample IDs and test-request details.
  4. Upload reports and supporting documents
    • Upload lab test reports to the BIS portal.
    • Foreign manufacturers must upload Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) documents.
  5. Submit physical copies (if required)
    • Provide signed hard copies of the application set as per BIS instructions.
  6. BIS review and registration approval
    • BIS reviews the documents and test results.
    • On approval, a registration (R-number) is issued.
  7. Marking & sale compliance
    • Ensure products display the BIS Standard Mark, R-number, manufacturer, and product details before sale.
Validity & Renewal
  • CRS Registration is granted for 2 years initially.
  • Renewal can be done for further periods without retesting (if no changes in product or manufacturing process).
